The Dragon Round eBook Stephen S Power

Powers has written a page turner - through a massive airlines delay I ready almost 2/3 of the book in one day and just didn't want to put it down.

This isn't a pulpy novel, however. It does ask the reader to pay attention - a feature I enjoy in my fantasy and science fiction reading. I enjoyed the rich economy of the writing. Scenes are detailed and lush without going on for pages - I never once felt that a single sentence had been added just to fill a page. The world-building is deft and clear without ever feeling intrusive.

On to the story: I don't want to reveal spoilers as there is much in Dragon Round to experience yourself, but... I will say that if you prefer shiny Hollywood stories and nicely tied ribbons and bows, you might not enjoy this one as much.

More than anything I've read recently (with the possible exception of Liu Cixin's Dark Forest) Dragon Round left me wanting more. I kept wondering back to the side table that holds my books-in-progress, then saying "Damn, I already finished it." *sigh*

Did I mention there are dragons? Really, what more do you need? :)

Happy Reading!

The Dragon Round eBook Stephen S Power Reviews

Excellent work with a selection of interesting personalities. Mr. Power has a gift to describe action scenes in gritty detail. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Meticulously detailed and wildly adventurous tale of danger ,survival and revenge. Also dragons
Read it with admiration and the thought-"What if Ahab and found a dragon's egg?"
Unlike some of the other reviewers here, I had no problems with the beginning of the book but I do agree that it is on the island that I became invested in the characters and hooked by the story. I will not give away what happens in Part Two but suffice it to say that this is excellently written and I was very much engaged throughout. I hope to see much more from the author in the future.
If you like plot-driven, visually extraordinary fantasy novels, then this is for you. This book grabs you from the start, and almost immediately things start going wrong for the characters. I won't spoil anything, but this book takes some turns you will not expect. Anyway, the characters are memorable, the world-building imaginative, and the language taught and descriptive. I really enjoyed this book, as did my fantasy-obsessed 13-year-old son.
Reading is a passion of mine. I am especially delighted when I come across new views, new approaches, ah, a freshness that is missing from too much of what I read.

This book does present this freshness, introducing me to characters that are new and still believable.

I offer this with a warning however. It did take me a while to get going with the characters, with the situation. On reading it a second time, I appreciate how the story started much more than I did the first time. Have patience, you shall be rewarded.
The Dragon Round has awakened in me something that has long been dormant--the ability of my imagination to soar! Not since my childhood have I had the pleasure of such a wonderful escape. Exquisitely crafted by Mr. Power, he brings to life a world of pirates, giant crabs, and, of course, dragons. This book is nothing less than a dopamine rush!
The Dragon Round is a good example of using common fantasy tropes in a fresh way. Yes, there are lots of books about dragons, revenge, and randomly finding feared creatures as orphaned babies and raising them, but none of them are quite like the Dragon Round.

At first, the frequent shifts in point of view drove me nuts, but once I fell into the rhythm of the story, I found I liked view it gave of both the story and the world. It let me see things from many points of view, so this turned into a book with no one who was really good or bad, just human.

Of course, the dragon was my favorite character, and like most good dragons, reminded me of a cat - specifically, Seamus, the oversized tom cat who can act loving and surprisingly well trained, but secretly wants to eat my face.

Getting back to the book, the world was well developed, the plot kept me wondering where the author was going with the book, the characters were multifaceted, and some of them experienced some profound growth. There may have been a few moments the plot or point of view changes made me want to chuck my kindle across the room, but for a majority of the time, this was a book I couldn’t put down and would happily recommend to anyone who likes dragons and epic fantasy. If you enjoy books like Game of Thrones or Waking the Fire, then you will probably enjoy this one.
